San Gimignano
Day 9 Side Trip
About two hours south of Florence, on our way to Assisi, we made a lunch stop at San Gimignano. A walled, medieval hill town in Tuscany, San Gimignano is known for saffron, pecorino cheese, and white wine made from grapes grown in the area. For me, the town was reminiscent of St. Paul de Vence, France, but on a much smaller scale - a preview of what we would see in Assisi.

Meandering through the streets on a rainy day, we stopped for "some of the best ice cream in the world" at The Gelateria, as opposed to “the world’s best gelato” sold around the corner at Gelateria Dondoli. That was after a long walk and a delicious focaccia sandwich at Bar La Cisterna.
Sadly, there were no cats seen in San Gimignano. They are smart enough to stay out of the rain.
This foccicia featured artichokes and baked ham. Very good!
